Dry skin is a common problem, especially for people in air-conditioned rooms, those working outdoors, or during cold weather. When skin becomes too dry it can feel irritated, itchy, flaky or even sting and turn red, so proper care matters to bring skin back to being hydrated and healthy.
Causes of very dry skin — being in cold or dry air such as air-conditioned rooms or cold weather; using soaps or cleansers that are too harsh; long, hot showers; ageing, which reduces the skin’s natural oil production; and certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
1. Choose a gentle cleanser — Use a soap or facial foam free of sulfates and alcohol, and avoid products that strip too much moisture from the skin.
2. Moisturise well — Choose a cream or lotion with water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter or ceramides, and apply it immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.
3. Avoid very hot showers — Hot water strips the skin’s natural oils. Bathe in comfortably warm water and keep it short.
4. Drink enough water — Hydrating from the inside is just as important as applying cream. Aim for 6–8 glasses of water a day so skin does not dehydrate.
5. Use a humidifier — If you are in an air-conditioned or dry room, use a humidifier to stop skin from drying out further.
6. Protect skin from the sun — Even dry skin can be damaged by UV rays, so use a sunscreen that is gentle on sensitive skin.
When to see a doctor — If skin becomes very flaky, itchy, stinging or cracked, consult a dermatologist, as it may signal a skin condition that needs treatment. Caring for very dry skin means hydrating from the outside and nourishing from within, together with everyday habit changes.
